The marriage between Obama's parents was a short-lived one, however.In the early 1960s, interracial relationships were still quite rare in many parts of America, and even technically illegal in some states.

Obama, however, was not hoping for a career as an author: he decided to run for a seat in the Illinois state senate. A few years later, Obama decided to run for a seat in the U. In the primary, he had managed to do what few African American politicians had ever done: record an impressive number of votes from precincts that had a predominantly white population.
The family lived near the capital of Jakarta, where his half-sister Maya was born.
At the age of ten, Obama returned to Hawaii and lived with his maternal grandparents; later his mother and sister returned as well.
He also began to explore his African roots and not long after his father's death traveled to meet his relatives in Kenya for the first time.
